DIY Fixes When Your Heater’s Not Working
1. Is Your Thermostat On?
This may seem obvious but when you come home to a cold house and are concerned about a heater not working you may think the worst and forget to check the thermostat. So, just to be on the safe side, make sure the thermostat switch is in the ON or HEAT position.
If you find the thermostat is in the OFF or FAN ONLY, put the switch to the ON, AUTO or HEAT position and see if your furnace starts working.
2. Do the Thermostat Batteries Need to Be Replaced?
Ok, so you’ve confirmed your thermostat is on, but what if its batteries are dead? Turn your thermostat off, carefully remove the cover of the thermostat (using your instruction booklet as a guide) and install new batteries in the thermostat.
3. Did You Run Out of Oil?
If your furnace runs on oil, you could have run out of oil. Check the level in your oil tank to make sure you didn’t run out.
4. Did the Emergency Shutoff Switch Get Turned Off?
Some systems come with an emergency shutoff switch. This switch is often found at the top of the basement stairs and looks much like a light switch. If this has accidentally been turned off it will turn your furnace off and you’ll have no heat. If you find this off, turn it back on and see if your furnace starts heating.
5. Do Your Filters Need to Be Changed?
If you feel heat coming from your heater vents but it feels like there’s not a lot of air flow, it may be time to replace your furnace’s air filter. Over time these filters can become dirty, blocking air flow.
6. Did the Pilot Go Out?
Most furnaces have a pilot. If this goes out it needs to be re-lit for the furnace to heat. Carefully relight the pilot, following the instructions for your furnace. If you’re not comfortable doing this safely, Mohawk Heating’s emergency service technicians can come out and relight it for you.
