Replacing Your Furnace or Boiler

Make the most of your tax refund with a new furnace

Upstate New York has just experienced one of the mildest winters on record, and we’ve all enjoyed the lower fuel prices and deep savings this past year. Unfortunately, we all know fuel prices will eventually rise, and no one knows what next winter’s weather will bring – so the savings may be short-lived. Your old furnace or boiler may have had an easier year than most, but it still may be time to consider replacing your furnace.  When a furnace runs inefficiently, you’re wasting your money on fuel, and likely releasing more carbon gasses than you should.

If your furnace is old, there is a very good chance that it is also inefficient – and you’re spending more than you should to heat your home – even in the mildest winter.

Furnace or Boiler Efficiencies

According to Energy.gov, statistics show that on average, older furnaces and boilers have efficiency ratings in the range of 56%-70%. Modern conventional heating systems can achieve efficiencies as high as 98.5%, which essentially means that it’s converting nearly all of the fuel you’re burning into useful heat for your home.

Not only is this a long-term savings, but it can often cut your furnace’s pollution output by as much as half. Upgrading your furnace from 56% efficiency up to 90% in an average home in colder-climate zones will save 1.5 tons of carbon dioxide emissions in a gas furnace. If your furnace is oil-burning, you would reduce your furnace’s emissions by 2.5 tons!

We recommend a “sealed combustion” furnace or boiler, which brings outside air directly into the burner to the outside without the need for a damper for draft hood. A sealed combustion unit also eliminates the risk of back drafting dangerous combustion gases – giving you and your family the peace of mind they are safe and secure.

Not only is this a great time to save and spend your tax investment on a wise investment, but you may also qualify for a rebate from National Grid.
