How Often Do You Need Furnace Maintenance?

Our service technicians hear the same question a lot… “how often does my furnace need maintenance”? There are a few different ways to service your furnace. Let’s look at each one and how often it should be completed. Some of these tasks you can do as the homeowner while some are best left to trained technicians and are included in our  planned service agreements.

Important Aspects of Furnace Maintenance

Change Furnace Air Filters Regularly

One of the most important aspects of oil and gas furnace maintenance is keeping air filters clean. A dirty air filter puts excessive strain on your furnace, reduces its efficiency, and increases your energy costs. For systems with 1″ pleated filters most manufacturers recommend replacing these filters once per month. In addition, after installing the new, clean filter, it’s important to replace the cover over the filter compartment.

Keep Ductwork Clean

Keeping your events and ductwork clean helps your furnace to run more efficiently and helps to reduce the dust and allergens in your home. One way to help keep the ductwork clean is to back you and clean around the furnace vents inside your home. In addition, Mohawk Heating provides a duct cleaning service in which we vacuum and clean the inside of all the ducts and air vents in your house.

Preventative Maintenance for your Furnace

In order to keep your gas or oil furnace running smoothly and efficiently most manufacturers (including our partner Lennox) will recommend annual preventative maintenance. Mohawk Heating’s furnace maintenance checklist includes cleaning and inspection of the interior parts of your furnace. During an annual visit, technicians will remove debris inside your furnace, blower and vents as well as inspect the flame sensor and burner flames. A furnace service plan can help keep your furnace running smoothly, reduce your energy costs, help potentially avoid a failure and improve the air quality in your home.
